What is Woodblock Printing?

Woodblock printing is a traditional heritage craft that has close ties to India. My woodblock stamps are all hand carved by artist craftsmen in India and so each block is unique. I use fabric paints to apply them to the block using a small sponge and then print onto fabric (and paper) to make a beautiful handprinted image and pattern. My workshops are all suitable for beginners as i provide time to demonstrate how to make a good print and give you time to practice printing onto paper using different blocks and experimenting with paint colours and pattern.

Select a block that catches your eye, it might be floral, geometric or botanical...

Apply paint to the block with a sponge dibber stick

Using a small sponge dibber wet the sponge in the tray of paint and dab it onto the block. You want to get enough paint coverage to print well but not loose the outline of the design

Press the block firmly down onto the surface you wish to print on

Once you've decided where you want to print, place the block firmly facedown onto the fabric and press down for a few seconds

Lift the block up and see the print you have made

Lift your block up to reveal the print you have left behind, you are ready to re-apply the paint and go again!
